Bike trip in the land of Trulli, a hilly area with a mild climate and gentle profiles, an area inhabited for thousands of years. Its rural landscape preserves the historical and cultural heritage of this land, kept with effort by the strong hands of the peasants who still work with sacrifice these lands.
Based in Alberobello, Unesco World Heritage for its magical trulli, you will discover by bike this part of the territory, reaching within a few kilometers Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Noci, and devoting a day to the most spectacular caves of Southern Italy.
Highlights
Day 1 - Alberobello
More than a thousand cones upside down toward the sky welcome you in Alberobello. The history of these strange homes mingle easily with local myths and legends. The latest studies carried out by a local scholar associate Alberobello to the Turkish town of Harran, in Kurdistan: “The majority of scholars believe that the architecture of the Trulli in its primitive forms has come to us from the Near East. Among the earliest evidence we note those of Harran in Kurdistan, place mentioned in Genesis because from there Abraham left to Ur.” Upon arrival, tasting of local products in a trullo shop.
Day 2 - Noci (about 35km)
After breakfast you will test your bikes with this first excursion, an introduction to the territory: hills, tidy and colourful vineyards, olive groves, forests of oak.
Your goal today will be Noci, a town with a well preserved historic centre.
If you do not fancy to sit in one of the restaurants that you can find near Noci, we recommend a gastronomic excursion to the coolest grocery store of Puglia, “Marino”, where you can taste their Divine Sandwich.
Back to Alberobello following the way to Barsento; but be careful not to descend too fast, because you would miss the crossing for the Mount Barsento, where in a bucolic setting you will find a rural church built in the 6th century.
Day 3 - Martina Franca (about 30km)
Today the route is almost completely flat; the only ascent will be the one that will take you to Mount St. Martino that houses the old town of Martina Franca. This art city decorated in Baroque style is in between the white buildings of Ostuni and the 17th century architecture of Lecce. Walking through its narrow streets you will be in front of a unique artistic expression.
The town takes its name from its patron saint, San Martino. The name “Franca” was given by Philip of Anjou in the 14th century, to exempt the town from the payment of taxes. That’s how the centre, attracting many people from the surrounding hills, developed quickly turning into a well-fortified city.
After strolling through its historical centre, we advise you to sample a couple of really famous local products: the Capocollo, Puglia appreciated cold cut, Slow Food Presidium since 2007, and the Bocconotto, sweet shortbread with a cream and black cherry heart, to taste strictly at Café Nuova Tripoli.
Day 4 - Locorotondo (about 25km)
Few kilometres by bike to reach Lorocotondo, small white village whose wonderful balcony overlooks the heart of the Itria Valley. The lands here are devoted to the cultivation of vines, which with the help of the sun produce a light and fresh white wine: the Locorotondo Doc.
Take back your bikes maybe after a careful “culinary research” in one of the small restaurants that the old town hides.
And if on your return to Alberobello you are still “thirsty”, you can enjoy some wine tasting at one of the wineries in Alberobello.
Day 5 - Castellana Caves (about 30km)
On your last day you will cycle to the largest karst caves in Italy!
The Castellana caves run underground for over three kilometers in an atmosphere between evocative power and magic, reflections with stalagmites and stalactites grown with ancestral rhythms. All this is the result of the erosive action of surface water, which for millennia have slowly dug this hole to open the gate to the sea.
After the visit you can stop to enjoy a good dish at one of the small restaurants that are in the vicinity of the caves, or you can extend your route by following down the path to Monopoli. After a nice bath in the beautiful Mediterranean Sea it will be easier to follow the path back even if slightly uphill.
Day 6 - Alberobello
After breakfast end of services.
To learn more about the many stories and legends on the fascinating conical constructions of Alberobello, you can visit the Museum of the Territory “Casa Pezzolla” in Aia Piccola, one of the two halves of the old town.
