Lovely town with a majestic castle surrounded by cafes and pizzerias, a Romanesque cathedral and a Medieval old centre. It once was headquarter of a powerful county under the Acquaviva D’Aragona earls.
The House of Acquaviva d´Aragona had, among others, the Guercio of Puglia, earl Giangirolamo II (1600-1665) character of many stories and legends.
He was also a great patron giving hospitality to Paul Finoglio, painter from Caravaggio school. The art gallery in the castle shows Finoglio paintings and period clothes and objects.
You can start your walk from the castle and the Villa Garibaldi in front of it, then enter the cathedral and pass by St Benedicte Monastery and the ancient city walls. From one of the many archways that were the old town gateways you will reach Piazza XX Settembre with the city hall.
